FAQ

Common questions

How does the matching process work?

You answer five short questions about what you need, where you are, and how you'd like to pay. We surface therapists who fit, and an intake coordinator reaches out within one business day to book your first session.

Is this service free for me?

Yes. The directory and matching are free to use. Sessions you book are billed by the therapist or covered by your insurance plan.

Do I have to use insurance?

No. Many therapists accept self-pay clients, and some provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement.

What if my insurance isn't listed?

Submit the matching form anyway and let us know your carrier. The intake coordinator can help check coverage and find an option that works for you.

Can I request a specific therapist?

Yes. From any therapist's profile page, click 'Get matched with [name]' and the matching form will route your inquiry to that therapist's intake.

What if I'm in crisis right now?

If you're in immediate danger, call 911. For mental-health crisis support, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), 24 hours a day, anywhere in the U.S. This directory is for non-urgent care only.

Is my information kept private?

We use your information only to match you with a therapist and route your inquiry to the right intake coordinator. We don't sell your data, and we don't use it for marketing.

How quickly will someone contact me?

We aim to follow up within one business day. If you submit over a weekend, you'll typically hear from us on Monday.

Can I see a therapist online?

Yes — most therapists in the directory offer telehealth sessions. You can filter for telehealth or browse therapists licensed in your state.

What if I don't connect with the therapist I'm matched with?

It happens, and we can help. Let your intake coordinator know after a session or two if the fit isn't right and we'll work on a rematch.

Is therapy right for me?

If you've been thinking about it, that's usually a sign worth taking seriously. Therapy isn't only for people in crisis — many people use it as a regular check-in or to work through specific transitions. A first session is a low-stakes way to find out if it's helpful for you.

Who runs this directory?

Northbound Therapy is operated as an independent directory of mental-health clinicians. The therapists listed maintain independent practices.
